If you're looking for the best caliber for turkey hunting, consider a 12-gauge shotgun. With its power and pattern density, it's the most popular and versatile choice among hunters. Smaller shotguns, such as the 20-gauge or .410 bore, can also be effective, and so can certain rifle calibers (though be sure to check your state's rifle laws before heading out).

The 12-gauge is a go-to turkey-hunting shotgun, but with modern ammunition such as Tungsten Super Shot (TSS), the 20-gauge is fast becoming an option for hunting birds at greater distances.

When the season closes, and you've hopefully processed some game to fill the freezer, it's time to turn your attention to post season rifle care. Even if you plan to shoot at a range between seasons, having a post-season rifle protocol is a great way to ensure your rifle is clean, safe, and ready for future hunts. 

Just as a builder knows when to use the right tool, a hunter should know how to choose the right firearm for their intended game. Different shotguns will deliver different results in the range and out in the field.

Very rarely will all conditions align, and you'll be able to take a shot just like you've been practicing at the range: straight back behind the rifle, beautifully square shoulders, and a steady breathing rate.
