Predator hunting is often a big topic of discussion among hunters and nonhunters alike. Should it be done, and if so, how often and by what method?

Every year, after my deer tags are filled and duck season comes to a close, I shift my attention to predator control. Coyotes can be hunted year-round in nearly every state, but the late winter and early spring is a great time to focus on hunting coyotes. 

Coyotes have been steadily expanding their range in the Eastern U.S. for the past century, filling a void left by gray and eastern wolves. Without those larger canids around, coyotes have made themselves at home in the woods, fields, and even cities.

Many avid whitetail hunters shift their focus to coyote hunting in winter. This time of year is generally referred to as the deer hunters' "off-season," and hunting coyotes after the whitetail season can be helpful for several reasons.

What do you do after deer season ends? The best hunters treat hunting like a professional sport, and they keep hunting to stay sharp. Coyote hunting is a great way to do this.

Coyotes are extremely smart animals with keen eyesight and a strong sense of smell. Hunting them during the prime winter months (November–February) can be your best bet for catching one of these creatures.
